I just transported an elderly person for a possible CVA. The nursing home said the patient had an altered mental status begining four days ago. They ran labs and nothing out of the ordinary. I questioned the nurse about why is the patient going to the hospital emergency room today if it began four days ago.

The real story, the nursing home wanted to take the patient to an out patient CT scan. The power of attorney (POA) didn’t want to pay the $75 for the transport. The solution was to send the patient to the ER in an ambulance (billed cost over $800).

Tell me there is nothing wrong with our current healthcare system. I dare you.
